For Immediate Release

3/28/2019

The Carroll Technology Council, Inc. (CTC) and the Mid-Atlantic Gigabit Innovation Collaboratory (MAGIC) are honored to be selected by the Cybersecurity Association of Maryland, Inc. (CAMI) as two of three finalists for its third annual Maryland Cybersecurity Awards Celebration. This celebration will highlight the best and brightest of Maryland’s cybersecurity industry. Finalists were selected by an independent panel of judges represented by industry leaders. Winners from the seven signature award categories will be announced at the Maryland Cybersecurity Awards Celebration on April 11, 2019. CTC and MAGIC are honored to both be finalists for the Cybersecurity Industry Resource Award. This award celebrates a non-cybersecurity business, organization, academic institution or government agency that has significantly contributed to Maryland’s cybersecurity industry through its products, services or mission. The third finalist for this award is CyberWire.

“The fact that Carroll County has two finalists up for the Maryland Cybersecurity Association’s Industry Resource Award showcases the great supportive business environment that we have in Carroll to build and grow the information technology sector. We are thrilled that these organizations will be recognized statewide”, stated Denise Beaver, Deputy Director of Carroll County Department of Economic Development.

Since its inception in 2004, the Carroll Technology Council has developed many new programs that benefit Carroll County and the region.  The focus has been on building relationships between member organizations, facilitating the development of technology expertise, and providing potential new business opportunities. CTC’s mission is to provide technology leadership, information, and resources to develop members’ businesses, build strong community partnerships, and advance technology in Carroll County, MD.   Three main platforms enable CTC to fulfill its mission: Education, Workforce Pipeline development, and Networking. CTC builds Carroll’s Workforce Pipeline through Carroll County TechHire connects local participants in leading-edge tech training programs to a network of over 520 county employers. The TechHire partners communicate tech job openings, help to improve alignment of curricula with employer needs, and promote hiring and recruiting from non-traditional training programs.   And finally, business-to-business networking events connect strategic community partners and member companies.

MAGIC is building a tech ecosystem that creates and nurtures talent, entrepreneurship, and tech businesses, elevating the Westminster gigabit community to lead the Mid-Atlantic region. MAGIC’s Capture the Flag (CTF), cybersecurity competitions are beginner-level experiences for high school and college aged students.  Teams of 2-4 students are challenged to work their way through a series of cybersecurity puzzles set up in a “jeopardy” style format to find hidden flags. MAGIC has specifically focused its CTF events for entry level participants in an effort to bring new and young individuals into the technology and cybersecurity pipeline. At the same time, these events connect talent with cyber professionals who participate as volunteer coaches during the events. By building a pool of interested cybersecurity students, MAGIC is helping to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap for employers throughout Maryland. 113 students from 39 cities in 3 states participated in MAGIC’s 4th CTF, 149 students from 43 cities in 7 states participated in the 5th CTF and 124 students from 44 cities in 3 countries participated 6th CTF. MAGIC’s 7th CTF will be on April 13, 2019.

All finalists for the Maryland Cybersecurity Awards Celebration are automatically entered into the People’s Choice Award category.
