In the spirit of Earth Day, the Carroll Technology Council (CTC) Women in Technology Roundtable members invite middle school girls to participate in Make Jewelry: A Recycled Adventure, a jewelry making design challenge. The challenge will run from February 1st- April 14th with a Showcase of designs taking place on Sunday, April 22nd at the Carroll Nonprofit Center.
Participants are invited to individually design and fabricate an original jewelry set (necklace, earrings, and bracelet) ready to show on display. The sets are to be designed and created using maker technologies available in the community and recycled materials found in the home. Participants will utilize community makerspaces located at the Ting Makerspace: Westminster and Exploration Point located in the Carroll County Public Library Eldersburg Branch.
There is great opportunity to design and fabricate something new out of things that we overlook every day. Theresa Bethune, CTC’s Women in Tech Roundtable facilitator states “Studies show that girls are more interested in technology when it’s used to solve problems. CTC’s Women in Tech believe that combining problem solving with a creative project will engage middle school girls, while connecting them with valuable resources, experience with maker technologies, and most importantly, mentors who can help them develop into tomorrow’s technology leaders.”
The entry fee for this design challenge is $15 and includes jewelry making supplies, passes to both the Ting Makerspace: Westminster and Exploration Point, as well as mentoring opportunities with the CTC’s Women in Tech. Prizes will be awarded based on creativity, reusing, use of maker technology, wear-ability and completion.

The Details:
The entry fee for this design challenge is $15. This includes:
- Jewelry making materials (Received upon registration): Jewelry Wire, Beading string, Earring Hooks, Clasps, Jump Rings, Crimp beads
- 5 passes to the Ting Makerspace
- Access to Exploration Point! at the Eldersburg Branch of the Carroll County Public Library

- Contest opens and entrants can register
- Registration ends April 1, 2018
- April 14, 2018: Entry submission deadline. All entries must be received at the Ting Makerspace: Westminster by 2:00 P.M.
- April 22, 2018, 1:00 – 3:00 pm: Recycled Jewelry Maker Faire at the Carroll Nonprofit Center located at 255 Clifton Blvd., Westminster. Doors will open at noon to setup your display. All entries will be on display with entrants in attendance for chatting with visitors. Judges will critique the entries from 12:30 – 1:30 pm. Visitors will vote for the fan favorite from 1:30-2:30pm. Winners will be announced at 2:45. All displays must be taken down at 3:00pm.
